The weather feels like fall. Weather predictions I’ve seen are calling for early fall weather and at least average precipitation for this winter. Maybe above average, seems like a 50/50 shot for that but a good season ahead, FALL IS THE BEST TIME FOR PLANTING.

Fall fertilizing should be done this month. Use a balanced fertilizer for most of your trees and shrubs. We carry16-16-16 in 20 pound bags, and 15-15-15 in 50 pound bags. We carry organic all purpose fertilizer in 5# box, or 25# and 40# bags. If you have only a few plants, we also have it in 1# boxes. Be sure to fertilize your deciduous plants and perennials before they show signs of dormancy. Give your tomatoes a balanced fertilizer now and you should get more production out of them for another month, maybe longer. With the cooler weather coming, trees and perennials will start to go into dormancy probably in October. I’m actually seeing a few signs of fall color at the nursery now. Fertilize citrus now, then let them go through the winter without feeding, but do protect them if there is freezing weather in the winter. Use a citrus fertilizer on your citrus trees. Give roses fertilizer now and you should get some more nice blooms before the winter. They bloom better when it is cooler. This should be the last feeding for your roses. Use a rose fertilizer or a balanced fertilizer for your roses. Wait to fertilize Rhododendrons, Azaleas, and Camellias until after they have bloomed. You don’t want to promote growth now because it will be at the expense of blooms in the early spring. They should be fertilized 3 times after bloom, each 30 days apart.

Winter vegetables will be available at the nursery next week. Shipments come on Fridays, so if all goes as planned, they should be in on the 18th. We have been waiting for the weather to cool, and it looks like it is now here. Looks like upper 80’s to 90 in the forecast for next week with nice cool overnight temperatures. Get them in when it is still warm enough to get development of roots and plant. Mid to late September and October are good times to plant. Looking at the long range forecast (as of today) it appears the cooler weather is here to stay. Hopefully for the rest of the season.
Onion Sets, Garlic bulbs, and Shallots will be in soon. Order is in, waiting for a confirmed ship date.

Continue with deep soaking of your trees and regular watering of your shrubs and plants. You can cut back on frequency now though. For established trees, once a week good deep soak should be fine. For newly planted trees, 2-3 times per week. Watch the ground. If it is still moist, then wait. If it looks dry, then water. Always use a deep soak on trees to ensure deep rooting. Nights are cooler and days getting shorter so the ground does not dry out as quickly as it did in July and August. Fall is on the way!
